Inspired by Insects: New Implants for Bone Repair
نویسندگان
چکیده
Bones are vital and strong, but not invincible—they can be broken. Normally, bones repair themselves. However, sometimes broken must supported using what is called an implant. An implant a man-made device used to replace or support missing part of the human body. In case bone, aims at helping bone regain its natural function. inserting foreign object into body has several possible complications. particular, bone-repair implants often associated with difficult-to-fight bacterial infections. Many approaches materials being studied improve implants. Our team based our on bacteria-killing structures present certain insects. results provide evidence that these could help us develop repair, while prevent

Porous Gelcast Ceramics for Bone Repair Implants
Lightweight, porous ceramic structures are being developed for a variety of biologically-related applications. In bioengineering, there is interest in replacing metal-based implants with more functional implants consisting of porous bioceramics that are bioresorbable. In the design of bioinspired ceramic structures, there is a desire to understand the coupling between geometric complexity and p...
متن کاملPhysiologically inspired coding strategies for cochlear implants
Cochlear implants are the first and until now the only existing prosthesis that can substitute an entire sensory system – the hearing system – nearly completely. After implantation and a period of rehabilitation, most deaf patients are able to use the telephone or listen to the radio with their cochlear implant system. Although top performing cochlear implant subjects understand speech nearly p...
متن کاملGenetic Repair Strategies Inspired by Arabidopsisthaliana
Recent advances in genetics controversially suggest that the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana performs genetic repair using genetic information that originates in the individual’s grandparent generation. We apply this ancestral genetic repair strategy within an Evolutionary Algorithm (EA) to solve a constraint based optimisation problem. Results indicate that the grandparent based genetic repai...
متن کاملAntimicrobial implants and bone allografts: new uses for old antibiotics
Bone grafting is the procedure whereby missing bone is replaced with material from either the patient’s own body (autograft), that of a donor (allograft) or with synthetics. The use of exogenous materials to reconstruct skeletal defects is not a new concept. Artificial, synthetic or natural substitutes, in the form of gold and silver plates and pieces of coconut shell, were found in cranial def...
متن کاملGenetic Repair for Optimization under Constraints Inspired by Arabidopsis Thaliana
It has recently been proposed that the model plant, Arabidopsis thaliana (thale cress), uses a newly discovered genetic repair system to repair errors at the genetic level. A. thaliana uses information from the grandparent’s genes as a basis for this correction – so genetic information appears to skip a generation. We apply this gene repair strategy to a combinatory optimization problem, firstl...
